I’m going to start with a statement that might make a few traditional CFOs a little uncomfortable: Your marriage principles are your secret weapon for the bottom line.
I’ve sat in the high-stakes rooms. I’ve been the guy looking at the spreadsheets, the mission objectives, and the quarterly projections. I’m a veteran, and I know what it means to focus on a goal until the job is done. But after years of coaching high-level executives and building my own businesses, I’ve had a massive "aha" moment.
The greatest threat to your ROI isn’t the market. It’s not your competitors. It’s the friction in your relationships.
This is the third post in our series on Relational Mastery, and today we’re moving from the living room directly into the C-Suite. We’re talking about how the principles I wrote about in The Marriage Seed aren't just for couples, they are the foundational architecture for a high-performing, high-profit business.
The Invisible Tax on Your Business
Every time there is a breakdown in communication between a CEO and a COO, there’s a tax. Every time a department head feels undervalued or unheard, there’s a tax. Every time a team member is afraid to give honest feedback because the "relational soil" is toxic, you are losing money.
In the business world, we call this turnover, low engagement, or "friction." In the world of The Marriage Seed, we call it a lack of cultivation.
If you want a harvest of productivity, you have to look at the seeds you’re sowing in your workplace relationships. Relational Mastery is the skill of intentionally cultivating those seeds to ensure a healthy, sustainable environment. And in the corporate world, a healthy environment is a profitable one.

1. Confidence Built on the Bedrock of Trust
In my research for The Marriage Seed, one statistic stopped me in my tracks: roughly 84% of marriage separations cite trust as a core issue.
Now, look at your boardroom. If your executive team doesn’t trust one another, how much time is wasted on "CYA" (Cover Your Assets) emails? How much energy is spent navigating politics instead of solving problems?
Trust in the C-Suite functions exactly like trust in a marriage. It isn’t something you’re "given" because of your title. It’s a seed you plant through consistency. When you do what you say you’re going to do, every single time, you are building Relational Mastery.
The ROI: High-trust teams move faster. When I trust my partner, I don’t need to double-check their work or second-guess their motives. That speed equals a massive competitive advantage.
2. The Power of Assertive and Respectful Communication
One of the biggest lessons I teach in The Marriage Seed eBook is the difference between being "right" and being "effective."
In many corporate cultures, we’ve been taught that the loudest voice wins. We think "leadership" is about command and control. But let me tell you, that doesn't work in a marriage, and it’s a disaster for long-term business growth.
Relational Mastery in the workplace looks like assertive, respectful communication. It’s about being clear with expectations while maintaining the dignity of the person you’re speaking to.
Yes, I had to learn this the hard way. Early in my career, I was all about the "what" and forgot the "how." I got results, but I left a trail of burnt-out people behind me. That’s not being a World Changer; that’s just being a boss.
The ROI: Clear communication reduces misalignment. Misalignment is the number one killer of complex projects. By mastering the "soft" skill of relational communication, you save thousands of hours of rework.

3. Cooperation Over Competition
There’s a toxic myth in business that internal competition breeds excellence. We pit VPs against each other to see who can hit the highest numbers.
But think about a marriage. If I’m trying to "beat" my wife, who wins? Nobody. The relationship dies.
The C-Suite needs to adopt the "Winning Together" philosophy. When your leaders are focused on cooperation: functioning as a true partnership for the benefit of the entire organization: the results are exponential.
I’ve seen companies go from stagnant to skyrocketing simply by shifting the internal culture from "What can I get?" to "How can we win as one?" This is the heart of what I do in my professional development coaching. We dig into those relational seeds and pull out the weeds of ego and internal competition.
The ROI: Psychological safety. When people feel they are on a team that has their back, they innovate. Innovation is the engine of ROI.
4. Commitment to a Purpose Larger Than the Self
In The Marriage Seed, I talk about the importance of a transcendent purpose. A marriage that only exists for "happiness" will crumble when things get hard. A marriage built on a shared mission to change the world? That’s unshakable.
Your business is the same. If your only mission is "increase shareholder value," your team will jump ship the moment a higher salary comes along.
Relational Mastery involves connecting your team to a "Why." When you show your C-Suite that their work matters: that they are part of a legacy: you create a level of commitment that money can’t buy.
The ROI: Retention. Replacing a C-level executive can cost a company 213% of that person’s annual salary. Keeping your talent through relational commitment isn't just nice: it’s a financial necessity.

The "Aha" Moment for the World Changer
I’ll be honest with you. There was a time in my life where I thought my "work self" and my "home self" were two different people. I thought I could be a hard-charging, relational-ignoring executive from 9 to 5 and then switch on the "husband" mode at 6 PM.
It doesn’t work that way.
The way you treat people is the way you treat people. If you lack the patience to listen to your spouse, you likely lack the patience to listen to your Lead Developer. If you can’t navigate conflict at home without exploding, you’re likely creating a culture of fear at the office.
Relational Mastery is a holistic discipline.
When you start applying the principles of the Marriage Seed: patience, kindness, trust, and intentionality: to your C-Suite, something magical happens. The "vibe" of the office changes. People start showing up with their whole hearts. They stop working for a paycheck and start working for a vision.
How to Start Cultivating Your C-Suite Today
If you’re reading this and realizing your relational soil is a bit dry, don’t panic. Seeds can always be planted. Here are three things you can do this week:
Audit Your Interactions: Are you sowing seeds of encouragement or seeds of criticism? For every "fix this" comment, try to provide two "I appreciate how you handled this" comments.
Listen First: In your next executive meeting, try to be the last person to speak. Practice the relational mastery of active listening.
Invest in the Tools: Whether it's reading the full book, booking a session to look at your leadership style, or joining my upcoming Relational Mastery webinar on June 16–17, take the first step toward becoming a more relationally intelligent leader. If you’re serious about seeing a higher ROI through stronger relationships, this is a natural next step.

Final Thoughts: The Legacy of a Leader
At the end of the day, your legacy won't be a line on a balance sheet. Your legacy will be the people you impacted and the relationships you built.
But here’s the kicker: the more you focus on those relationships, the better that balance sheet tends to look. Relational Mastery isn't a distraction from the work; it is the work.
Are you ready to stop just managing and start cultivating? Are you ready to be the World Changer your company: and your family: deserves?
Let’s get to work. The seeds aren't going to plant themselves.
